New HV battery box filled with 2.5 garbage barrels of vermiculite. It gets everywhere. It takes an hour to clean out just to get to the battery. They don’t pay us to unbox this shit. You know how Christmas makes most people feel? Full of love and happiness? I’m the opposite x1000 right now. Do not approach me at work today.

Kinja'd!!!

Smarts are the only things I'm working on today. I mega-loathe smarts.

But it makes for a great addition to water loving plants :D

Thats probably like $1 00 worth of vermiculite . Think of the savings!

We once made an offer ( accepted) on a house, only to find during the inspection that the entire attic — 1-story and 2,500 sf -- was filled with about 6" of this stuff. It was pretty common insulation back in the 50s and 60s, and most of the old stuff had asbestos. The seller had it tested and proven to be asbestos-free, but we still backed out. The stuff just gets everywhere, and it’s not very good insulation to start with.

No idea. But it makes them safe to air ship from Germany. So saves a ton of time.

does that stuff serve any additional purpose now? Could it be vacuumed out of that box?

You could use it that way! But it's so light they would just track it everywhere.

Makes the battery safe to air ship from Germany. So saves a lot of time that way. It can be vacuumed but you need to empty the shop vac about 10 times. I scooped 90% of it out with an old coolant jug that I cut up, then vacuumed the rest.

New HV battery? How many miles did the victim have before its factory HV died?

I bet smart has a special aircraft aluminum coolant jug that they'll sell to your service department for $500.

Almost 10k. This is my first one. But the other smart electric certified guy in my shop has done like 10. In 6 months. Failures happening new on the showroom floor. 451 electric? Great! 453 electric? Trash.

You would have to empty it 10 times. The battery itself is in a large plastic bag. There are ratchet straps on the outside of the bag  holding it all in place. This shit gets inside all of the little creases. And you need to be careful not to get any into the electrical connectors on the battery itself.

As I am pulling timing chains off of a n ew QX80 and saw this .... honestly I kinda miss working on Smart’s. Kinda. But not really as I was the only electric certified person in the shop.

There’s only the two of us. I miss 451 electrics. Those were great to work on. Literally every other smart can fuck itself. Especially 453 electric. I would rather do SLS airbag recalls all day every day than one 453 battery.

I’ve done exactly 1.5 453 batteries. I quit half way through the second one. For other reasons, not the battery . And t hat car sat like that for about 2 months until they could get the next guy trained on Smart electrics . I think he quit not long after. Saw him delivering parts for NAPA once.

The actual work isn't hard. It's what the job pays, all the paperwork, the self discharge measurement that takes an hour with the SDS hooked up the whole time, cleaning up the fucking vermiculite.  And the fact that they took away all the best functionality points of the 451 electric and added in a bunch of stupidness for the 453 as far as serviceability goes.
